A Note about Tech Services Reorganization

In an effort to better serve our customers, and to take better advantage of our great staff resources, as of July 1, 2010 we began operating a newly reorganized Technology Services Branch.

The reorganization touches almost every area and staffer of the Branch, but its overall goal is simple: to make the customer experience easy and efficient. Anyone you've worked with before in Technology Services still can help you. And the Help Desk will remain your go-to place for your technology issues and questions.

Here's a summary of how the new branch operates. Technology Services now is divided into three service centers:

  • Digital Design and Media Services Center (video, graphics, print)
  • Information Systems Center (network & PC support, systems administration)
  • Technology Programs and Instructional Support Center (tech training and applications support; instructional technology; and web services and applications development)

The Digital Design and Media Services Center will offer an All-in-One Media Solutions destination for events.  Customers whose events involve audiovisual, design and print requirements will have all their needs met in this one place, instead of having to coordinate across departments and branches.

The Information Systems Center will be our hardware center, but with an eye to a future that is more centered on "cloud computing" and data warehousing, delivering applications and data needed for important decision-making simply, efficiently, and rapidly. We expect this area of our services to grow at a rapid rate.

Technology Programs and Instructional Support Center will oversee our efforts in the key areas of instructional technology, technology training and Web application and development services. We will continue to provide our outstanding financial, payroll, and other application support services to our customers throughout and beyond the county.

We no longer will be using the name of Regional Technology Center (RTC). The services formerly offered by RTC now will spread across the entire branch.

The reorganization will allow staff to team up no matter which center they are under, as the situation requires. The idea is to be flexible and nimble, putting our best resources together to accomplish jobs as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Toward that end, we intend to create a new system for project planning, in which projects are undertaken with a centralized and high-altitude approach.  The idea is to try to anticipate from the outset which areas will need to be involved in the project, and involve appropriate staff from the beginning.

Another change involves our Communication Services Department. When we formed our new branch last year, Communication Services was placed under the Tech Services umbrella.   However, since the Department’s mission is to convey the message of the County Office and the Superintendent, we’ve realized it makes more sense to put those folks in the Superintendent’s Office. (The designers, webmasters and Print Shop will remain in Tech Services.)

We’ll be talking more about our reorganization in the coming weeks. (To see the full details of the reorganization, look for new org charts soon on the SCCOE Intranet.)  In the meantime, please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions at all.
